Tetanus is a serious bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani that affects the nervous system and causes painful muscle stiffness, especially in the jaw and neck. It can interfere with breathing and be life-threatening.
Tetanus is caused by bacteria found in soil, dust, and animal feces. The bacteria enter the body through cuts, wounds, or burns. Unlike other vaccine-preventable diseases, tetanus is not contagious from person to person.
The tetanus vaccine is highly effective and provides long-lasting protection. It's usually given in combination with diphtheria and pertussis vaccines as DTaP (for children) or Tdap/Td (for adults).

According to WHO, tetanus causes approximately 34,000 newborn deaths and 20,000 maternal deaths globally each year. The case-fatality rate ranges from 10% to 90% depending on age, treatment availability, and overall health status.
